One of these days...

Kep Trefler's sketch blog.

Tagged well, not always safe for work.

“Why do you draw?”

(I am largely answering this outside of career drawing. That answer is different. It is because I believe I have the skill set for a project and I’m excited to work for a person or company. This is a different answer.)

I’m not sure how long I’ll have this up on the sketch blog but I do think about this. Why do I draw? My instinctive answer is because I always have. Because I’m good at it. Because it’s taken and is taking me to really exciting places. I draw what I want and I draw for other people. I like the praise from drawing, I like it a lot but it isn’t why I draw.

For myself, I largely draw one way, in one style, but in the past I have drawn differently for teachers and clients. I study all kinds of styles and read about drawing all the time while at the same time drawing everyday. Sometimes I share what I draw, sometimes I don’t. Sometimes I’ll share a WIP and never post the finished drawing. Why? I don’t know.

I have always drawn. Like I have always breathed, like I have always lived. It’s just part of who I am. But why?…Because I always have. Because I’m good at it. Because it’s taken and is taking me to really exciting places. Because it makes me happy. Because even when I draw really depressing things I can make people happy.

I don’t know.
